Fuenteovejuna by Jorge Muñiz at the Tenerife's Opera
Spain
Ópera de Tenerife presents its first title of the 2022-2023 season: Fuenteovejuna, by Jorge Muñiz.
Composer Jorge Muñiz received a commission from Ópera de Oviedo to adapt Fuenteovejuna to the opera, on the occasion of the 400th anniversary of the creation of Lope de Vega's work, one of the masterpieces of the Spanish Golden Age. The absolute premiere of this adaptation -with a libretto by Javier Alzumara and stage direction by Miguel del Arco- was in Asturias in 2018 and the Auditorio de Tenerife will be the second venue that will offer the performance of this contemporary work.
This three-act opera shows that some of the questions raised by Lope de Vega in the classic remain valid four centuries later: the solidarity force of a social mass under the repression of the established power and corruption. Muñiz -winner of the European Grand Prize for Young Composers- confirms with this work his commitment to social issues.
